Why Unpairing Is Essential
When you upgrade, sell, or simply want a fresh start, unpairing your Apple Watch from the iPhone is more than a courtesy—it’s a security necessity. It wipes your personal data, disables Activation Lock, and ensures the next user can pair without hurdles.
Unpairing from Your iPhone (Quick & Clean)
Open the Watch app, tap My Watch, tap the gear icon, select Unpair Apple Watch, and confirm. The watch will erase and reboot, freeing the device for new ownership.
- Launch Watch app on iPhone.
- Navigate to My Watch tab.
- Tap the gear icon beside your device.
- Select Unpair Apple Watch and confirm.
Unpairing Directly on the Apple Watch
If the iPhone isn’t nearby, the watch itself can handle the reset. Press and hold the side button until Power Off, tap Erase All Content and Settings, and confirm. This wipes all data and disconnects the device.
Post‑Unpairing Checklist
Once unpaired, double‑check that the Activation Lock is off by verifying in iCloud under Devices. Also, back up any remaining health data if you plan to keep the watch, or manually transfer it before reset.
